The Glass Menagerie

Directed by Monica White Ndounou
Playwright Tennessee Williams

The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’s poetic account of the Wingfield family during the Great Depression in St. Louis Missouri. Within their one-bedroom tenement, they cope and comfort each other while the absent Mr. Wingfield smiles at them from his “larger than life-size photograph”. Each family member seeks a remedy for their malaise, but their respective antidotes are at odds. From laughable measures and throwing caution to the wind as well as finding refuge in the simple things, they all want to escape their respective, although, shared situation. It’s a precarious arrangement with heightened stakes as the non-traditional casting offers an expanded view of each member’s motivations and limitations of the time.
